New Haven Food Bank and East Allen Family Resource Center

New Haven Food Bank
The New Haven Area Food Bank began in July 1983 to help the people who had lost their jobs at International Harvester. A small building was donated, rent-free, with the New Haven Area Food Bank being responsible for the utilities. It was run with donations and a volunteer staff. The New Haven Area Food Bank served southeast Fort Wayne and all of the New Haven area.

People come to the food bank by township trustee referral, church referral or simply walk in. They were given enough food for approximately 20 meals and could return in 30 days for more food. The amount of food given depended upon the size of the family.

The New Haven Area Food Bank lost its rent-free space the summer of 1998. Associated Churches, which provides money, food, and delivery services for other food banks in Allen County, continued to search for a space in the New Haven area to reopen the food bank.

In October 1999, a New Haven area food bank reopened. It is located in a mobile trailer sponsored by the Emanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven United Methodist Church and other local churches. It is parked in the parking lot of the Emanuel Lutheran Church every Tuesday.

The New Haven Area Food Bank reports that the number of families seeking assistance has increased dramatically over the last year.

 East Allen Family Resource Center
(formerly known as Arthur J. Blaising Social Services)
The East Allen Family Resource Center houses a small food bank to provide basic food items to the residents of Riverhaven as well as providing programming for the local children.  East Allen Family Resource Center is also currently sponsoring the lunch feeding site being held in our church.

The New Haven Area Food Bank and the food bank at the East Allen Family Resource Center both report that they are distributing food almost as quickly as it is donated.  The members of the Mission Work Area would like to challenge you to bring a food item every time you come to church.  Before you leave home, open up the cupboard door and select a nonperishable food item, a paper product or a personal care product to donate to the local food banks.  You may place your item in the grocery cart located in the Narthex.

You may give a financial gift by placing your money in the Sunday School offering during the month of July or by placing your gift in your regular offering envelope or an envelope from the back of the pew and marking your gift for Mission.

Thank you for your generosity and for being the feet and hands of Jesus in the New Haven community.
